The PRC Ministry of Culture and the Academy of Social Sciences invited me to Beijing to present a paper ["China Studies and the Image of China in Canada"] at the 2015 汉学与当代中国座谈会 Symposium on China Studies in Beijing [24-31 Oct.]. There were 26 Foreign Scholars and 21 Scholars from China. I was the only representative from Canada. The purpose of the symposium was to share our research and experiences as well as to promote Chinese Studies in our respective countries when we returned. In October of 2018, I was invited to China to receive an award [国际孝星 International Filial Piety Award] and was given the title of 文化使者 Cultural Ambassador for promoting Traditional Chinese Culture. What an honor.

    Mentor for an undergraduate student's Senior Thesis

    I was asked to become a mentor for a former student of mine. She is writing a senior thesis for her major: Performance and Theatre, and I am acting as a mentor and guide. The topic is clothing of the Tang Dynasty, and she is focusing on costume design, considering economics, politics, religion, education, and status as she designs these costumes.

    At Ryerson University we are trying to increase our course offerings relating to China. In the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, we currently offer CHS504 Chinese Cultural Traditions and CHS503 Chinese Literary Studies, which have proven extremely popular. In the future, more courses in China Studies will be approved to help Canadians understand China and appreciate their rich culture and literature.

Ryerson University offers university courses in Chinese from the Basic to Advanced Level. We focus on speaking as well as reading and writing.     2019 - Congratulations to Ryan Vopli 卫来恩 (a History major and 2018 Ryerson graduate) for receiving acceptance into the Peking University's MA Program in International Relations. You do Ryerson proud.

    2017 - Congratulations to 司马彦一 Mark Reynolds for receiving a four-year scholarship to study for a masters degree in Finance at 厦门大学 Xiamen University, starting in September of 2017. We are very proud of this TRSM graduate.

    2016 - Congratulations to 施跃威 William Snyder for coming in 2nd Place in the 15th Annual Chinese Language Speech Competition held at Brock University in 2016. The Chinese government paid for his trip to China in July of 2016. Also, Congratulations to 黑龙 Mark Donaldson for coming in 3rd Place.

    2018-2019, I taught HIS280Y "History of China" on the St. George Campus. We looked at the long history of China, considering the dynastic cycle in light of the contributions of women and other marginalized groups.

    2017, I taught HIS333H: "Catholicism in Asia in the Early Modern Era, 1500-1800." The first half, we reflect upon the Jesuits in China, and in the second half, we consider the role that the Catholics played in the Philippines under Spanish rule, culminating in a Historiographic Essay.

    At UTSC, I taught LGGA61H: "Introductory Mandarin II," focusing on strengthening skills in speaking, reading, and writing Chinese Mandarin at the elementary level.

  • Independent Translator teaching at Ryerson University

    Mentor and Translator

    Venita Jay (M.D.) and I are retelling - via translation - the story of Ramayana in simple Chinese for publication. After taking 4 Chinese courses in Chinese with me at Ryerson University, Venita was hungry for more Chinese, so I suggested that she tell me in Mandarin the story of Ramayana in very simple Chinese. We got started and now have completed a rough draft. Also, Venita has added drawings to supplement the multilingual text and is considering adding simplified Sanskrit.

    Grader for Chinese Proficiency Exams

    Currently I continue to grade Chinese Proficiency Exams for NYU, SCPS: Foreign Languages, Translation, and Interpreting. I have taught course in Chinese at NYU for 10 years and have created various forms of the proficiency exam. At present, NYU offers a Master's degree in Translation.

  • Independent Translator

    Chinese-English Translator

    Dr. Helen Xiaoyan Wu and I have just completed translating Volume 1 of the standard PRC Chinese Language textbook, New Practical Chinese Reader, 3rd ed. This book won the Award for Outstanding International Chinese Language Teaching Materials. It is published by 北京语言大学出版社 Beijing Language and Culture University Publishing Company in Beijing. The 3rd edition of the textbook was significantly rewritten from the 2nd ed. NPCR is currently used by the Confucian Institutes all over the world as well as all over China, but our version will be limited to those who understand English. There have been significant changes in the text to make Chinese a little bit easier to understand. Great job Liu Xun, the editor in chief for the textbook. We have begun translating Volume 2.

    Norah Creedon and I translated a novella [西尼罗症 "West Nile Virus"] by 陈河 Chen He and a short story [成人"Growing Up"] by 余曦 Yu Xi for publication in Toward the North: Chinese Canadian Writers, edited by Professors Xu Xueqing (York) and Wu Hua (UWO). This book is available on amazon.com .
