Center for American Culture and Race

    With my colleague in China

I helped to direct the Center for American Culture and Race which is housed on the campus on Guangdong Baiyun University in Guangzhou

China. This project is funded by a grant from the United States Embassy in Beijing and designed as a counterpart to the American-based Chinese Confucian Centers. There are more than two dozen American Cultural Centers (ACC) in China

but ours is the only version to deal specifically with matters related to race. Because the American experience cannot be understood without engaging issues of race and ethnicity

    especially those of African-Americans

this uniquely focused Center will set the African American experience within historical and contemporary contexts through books

    multimodal digital documents

    streamed media

and faculty and student exchanges. Central to this will be the Archways podcast

which takes its names from the arches that mark the entrances at JCSU and GBU.
