My work focuses on clinical and educational research associated with identifying risks and intervention methods for opioid/substance use disorders and treatment outcomes. I have worked with substance use and opioid use disorders for many years in direct treatment, teaching, and curriculum development of addiction-related training materials and resources. Areas of expertise include researching psychological complications associated with traumatic experience incurred during active disease that can impede treatment progress, opioid dependence, and the social perception of addiction as a disease.

    Project Coordinator

POWER is a collaborative project aimed at the prevention of opioid misuse in older women (55+) in Cambridge and Somerville. The Institute for Health and Recovery (IHR), in collaboration with community partners Cambridge Health Alliance, Somerville Cambridge Elder Services, the Cambridge Council on Aging, and with the support of the Massachusetts Bureau of Substance Addiction Services (BSAS), is working to address the risk factors of opioid misuse facing older women in our local communities.

    Our Strategy:

POWER addresses these risk factors through primary and secondary prevention strategies targeting the general public, healthcare and social service staff who work with older women, and women age 55+ themselves. Based on a needs assessment and informed by evidence-based practices, IHR is engaged in the following prevention efforts:

    ■ Public Awareness Campaign: Distribution of educational materials and appearances on cable
    access TV

    ■ Staff Training at Partner Agencies: Including basic information on opioids, screening and brief
intervention strategies, and addressing the intersection of trauma and pain

    ■ Psycho-Educational and Support Groups for Women 55+: Focused on information about opioids,
tools for dealing with pain and trauma, support around older life issues and reducing isolation

This three-year project will culminate in the dissemination of our findings to inform ongoing efforts for prevention of opioid misuse in older women nationwide.

*Funded by the Office on Women’s Health, US Dept. of Health and Human Services. The project’s Advisory Board includes members from OWH, BSAS, the Executive Office on Elder Affairs, and our community partners.
