  This book explores the challenges facing the South African Communist Party (SACP) as it tries to adapt to the fundamental changes occurring in South Africa. The study shows that the collapse of international communism forced most communist parties to modify their core strategies and ideological positions. I ask if communism has “failed

  ” how has the SACP become more popular and influential than ever before? The paradox is resolved by focusing on a combination of ideologically motivated cadres

  a disciplined organization structure

  and a carefully preserved symbiotic relationship with the African National Congress (ANC).
