  A study is made to design and implement a search engine for Amharic language web documents. We developed a prototype system with a\ncomplete language specific (Amharic) search engine that has a crawler

  an indexer\nand a query engine component. The crawler (Language Specific Crawler) crawls\nthe Web and collects Amharic web documents with Unicode encoding and stores\nthem in a repository. The next component

  etc) the documents and stores them in a structure that is\nefficient and appropriate for searching. The Query Engine component gives an\ninterface that the user can enter his/her information need in Amharic language\nusing Ethiopic script. It then parses the query

  \nselect the documents that are relevant to the query

  and return the relevant\ndocuments according to their rank. Lucene/Solr is used for the indexing as well as the search component of the protoptype system. Jsp/Servlet are used for the user interface and for communication with the backend system. Java is also extensively used for differnt components of the serach engine. We developed a carwler that can crawel the web and feed webpages to our language identified model. The language identifier model only filters pages that contain Amharic language contents only. different thrid party toos are used for text extraction
