Working Together to Improve Services for People Living with HIV/AIDS: An Example of Service Delivery Network Development From Rural Northeast Texas

SOCIAL ENVIRONMENTS AND HUMAN BEHAVIOR uses an innovative liberal arts approach to teach social work students the impact of the social environment on human behavior. The text includes readings organized into four modules: groups

    communities

    organizations

and social movements. Each set of readings brings together theoretical information

    research

    artistic expression

and practical application to give students a better understanding of the systems in which they will work. Each reading has been chosen to help students connect what they learn in the Human Behavior and the Social Environment course to other courses

as well as to the practice behaviors outlined by the revised Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards (EPAS) from the Council on Social Work Education.

    Now in its second edition

Rural Social Work is a collection of contributed readings from social work scholars

    students

and practitioners presenting a framework for resource building based on the strengths

    assets

    and capacities of people

a tool essential for working with rural communities.\n\nThis guide considers methods for social workers to participate in the work of sustaining rural communities. Each chapter features a reading integrating the themes of capacity-building and rural social work; discussion questions that facilitate critical thinking around the chapter; and suggested activities and assignments.\n\nExploring how social workers can integrate the tremendous resources that exist in rural communities into their practice

    Rural Social Work

Second Edition provides a solid introduction to the complex

    challenging

and rewarding work of building and sustaining rural communities.

The challenges to examining client satisfaction are demonstrated through an evaluation of dental services provided by a regional service provider to people living with HIV/AIDS. The process of developing and administering a measure of client satisfaction is discussed. Forty-one of 350 (11.7%) dental clients chose to participate. Quantitative and qualitative data suggests that overall participants are satisfied with services. Identified concerns included a lack of specialized dental

    medical

    mental health

and case management services. Implications of the study for service delivery

    future evaluations

and rural social work practice are addressed.

This essay discusses Mexico’s drug war along the California-Mexico border occurring in the Tijuana

    Mexico

border region. The authors also discuss Mexican drug trafficking into the United States from the San Diego-Tijuana border region and moving north to the San Joaquin Valley of California

one the most prosperous agricultural regions in the country. The authors examine the intersection of Mexican drug wars along the border

    drug trafficking to the north

    immigration from Mexico

and the San Joaquin Valley’s agricultural economy and its relationship to socioeconomic conditions in the area. The human cost of the drug trade on residents of the San Joaquin Valley is also presented. The authors suggest that the San Joaquin Valley

one of the most economically depressed regions in the U.S. despite its successful agribusiness

may be more vulnerable to the influences of Mexican drug trade than other areas of the country

and also to current U.S. immigration policy meant to secure the U.S-Mexico border.

This study surveyed participants in focus groups to identify factors that affect individuals living with HIV/AIDS in rural northeastern Texas. The average age of the respondents was 45.44. Participants included a diverse group of American Europeans

    Hispanics/Latinos

and African Americans. Although results are inconclusive

other studies have supported similar results regarding factors that impact treatment and services (Zuniga

    Buchanan

    & Chakravorty

2005). Some of the factors include lack of financial resources for the consumer

    stigma and discrimination

and lack of understanding on the part of the consumer and the community. More studies in rural areas serving people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA) are needed to begin the work towards breaking down barriers to provide healthier environments and achieving social and economic justice.
