    Masters Thesis

In this thesis I use a life history design to explore how twenty single mothers on welfare experience the meritocratic ideologies and restrictions embedded in welfare reform relative to their views on the \"American dream.\" Although welfare reform promises to contract with women to help lift them and their children out of poverty

in reality welfare-to-work programs are inadequate to the task. Younger women held unrealistically high views on the achievement of wealth as part of the American dream. Older women by contrast had more modest views of holding a stable job

or else believed that the American dream was not within their reach. None of the women felt that welfare-to-work programs were adequate for lifting them and their children out of poverty

and most viewed education and training as the most promising pathway out of poverty.

I engage students to critically look into the systematic designs of our society and economy and explore how our formal institutions promote a working ethic

    shape inequalities

and influence our informal behaviors. I intentionally place students in a position to observe the truths about themselves

    what they believe in

and require them to stand for something outside of themselves by digging deeper than the surface and forefront on their physical worlds.
