Award of Merit and Special Contribution

The American Planning Association recently awarded Shaunna K. Burbidge with their Award of Merit for her work on the Utah Pedestrian Safety Action Plan. The Utah Pedestrian Safety Action Plan was created as a collaborative effort by eight local

    state

and federal agencies to address pedestrian safety in Utah. This plan is the first of its kind nationwide to incorporate policy

    regulation

    infrastructure design

    enforcement

communications and education in a comprehensive way. Implementation of the plan will reduce pedestrian-related crashes

    injuries

    and fatalities

and guide the creation of a balanced transportation system that facilitates the safe interaction of all travel modes; where pedestrians of all ages and abilities can walk with awareness safely and comfortably.

    American Planning Association

    Outstanding Achievement in Plan Development

Dr. Burbidge was awarded the Outstanding Achievement in Plan Development Award for her work as a part of the Utah Collaborative Active Transportation Study (UCATS). This study employed a comprehensive approach to identify gaps in the existing bicycle and pedestrian networks across the Wasatch Front

and analyze the challenges facing people who use active transportation. Twenty-five priority projects were identified with the goal of creating a seamless multi-dimensional network of active infrastructure region wide. Active Planning was responsible for identifying significant barriers to cycling and walking over the 110 mile corridor and analyzing the health and safety impacts of top 25 prioritized projects.

reviews the submissions and identifies the top 16 projects nationwide to be highlighted as the “Sweet 16” for 2013.\n\nTwo of the top three projects submitted by UDOT for consideration were completed by Shaunna K. Burbidge. Her project “Identifying Characteristics of High-Risk Intersections for Pedestrians and Cyclists” was selected as one of the Sweet 16 receiving a Transportation Excellence through Research Award.\n\nThis research will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington

D.C. as a part of the State Department of Transportation High-Value Research Projects Session; Monday

    January 13
