If you get stuck with Prof. Halverson, you will really need the book. I suggest you take notes, watch the videos, and ask questions as well. You can see that he really loves lectures. He actually doesn't like to stop to answer questions. He has terrible handwriting. He doesn't give extra credit as well. You should be fine if you know and if you like history. For better understanding, I would recommend having a tutoring session.
