Texas Southmost College - Mathematics

Seeking Entry-Level Actuarial Position
Financial Services
Ramiro
Garza
San Antonio, Texas
I am extremely eager to enter the actuarial field. After teaching, for three years, I decided to change careers. The actuarial field appeals to me, because it requires using changing information to work on problems, and using computers to quickly work with massive amounts of data.

I really enjoy working with computers. I used them to save several man-hours, in Rio Hondo; to keep my kids honest, in San Antonio; and to give my all of my students professional-looking handouts and exams.

I have a Master of Science in mathematics, and a Bachelor of Science in chemistry, and I love to learn.

Experience

  • Rio Hondo Independent School District

    Math Teacher

    Math Teacher (first 12 weeks)
    • taught 7th and 8th grade math
    • learned how to manage students, work with parents
    • worked with peers and principals to improve, as a teacher

Migrant Coordinator (24 weeks, after Math Teacher)
    • worked with migrant students, grades 7-12
    • pulled some students out of electives, for one-on-one or small group learning
    • worked in some students' classes, so they could be assisted, while not missing out on the classroom environment
    • compiled the limited sample questions, and aligned each to the new curricula (grades 7-8, Algebra I), to help all math teachers, with state exam preparation
    • found a method to prepare calculators for state exams, in minutes, by one person -- the previous method required several teachers, setting two calculators, at a time
    • discovered that we were inadvertently, unnecessarily taking calculator functionality away from students

  • Texas Southmost College

    Adjunct Lecturer

    • taught College Algebra and Contemporary Math courses
    • emailed students PDF files of solutions, when they sent questions
    • created PDF documents with test review solutions, so students could practice anytime, anywhere, and with any device

  • University of Texas at Brownsville

    Teacher

    • taught Dual Credit Precalculus and Dual-Credit/A.P. Calculus
    • at the end of the school year, the school's grading machine wasn't cooperating with the final exams, for Precalculus and Calculus; i found grading software, which worked on computers, tablets, and smartphones, to ensure that our deadline was met
    • was told by students and other teachers that i taught students in a way they hadn't been taught before: with fundamentals, proofs, and as adults
    • pure math concepts, like writing an integral as a limit of a Riemann sum, are being emphasized by College Board, on the A.P. exam; in district-wide meetings, i was able to assist many veteran teachers, who hadn't practiced these skills in years
    • constantly kept calculators in test mode, which allowed for remote clearance, so students could not see what had been input, by the previous student
