Visiting Assistant Professor at Michigan State University
Petra
Hendrickson
Lansing, Michigan
I earned my Ph.D in Political Science from Michigan State University in August 2015. My academic research interests focus on questions of political conflict, human rights, global gender dynamics and humanitarian intervention, employing both quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques. My teaching interests focus on these same issues. I have considerable experience teaching courses on genocide, introductory international relations and political violence & revolution.

In addition to continuing to develop my academic credentials, I am interested in carrying out more applied research and other tasks for human rights and related organizations.

Education

  • Michigan State University

    Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)

    Political Science
My primary fields of study were comparative politics and international relations. My dissertation, "Parsing the Relationship between Coup Attempts and Civil Conflict Onsets" examined the connections between coup attempts and civil conflict onsets; although past literature has typically considered them independent events, I found evidence that they are more instructively thought of as parts of a broader underlying process. While a number of factors leaders have little short-term control over (such as GDP and rebel activity) contribute to the occurrence of both events, the policies leaders choose to pursue may manipulate the specific timing and sequence of coup attempts and civil conflict onsets.
