Nowak
Madison, Wisconsin Area
I am a rising senior at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, majoring in Human Development and Family Studies and following a pre-medical track. I aspire to be a part of a profession centered around helping others regardless of circumstance. I want to focus in on facilitating people towards leading healthier and therefore happier lives. As such, I've taken a vast amount of course work in HDFS and in STEM, and have worked a variety of jobs primarily focused in the healthcare industry. Now, I'd like to implement my skill set and experience in a clinical-based research setting.

I am currently preparing for my medical college admission test (MCAT), and will be applying to medical schools upon graduation. I hope to procure my MD and reshape how people experience health care in today's world.

I would describe myself as compassionate, confident, hardworking, honest, dependable, empathetic, and a critical thinker.

As a rising senior who has prepared for medical school over these past three years, I have:

- Participated in a research lab in the neurosurgery department and have been a part of a research team for almost two years.
- Volunteered in various organizations that particularly involve children and healthcare. Some examples are Feed My Starving Children (FMSC), Badger Volunteers - Glendale Elementary, Wisconsin Pre-Medical Society, SSM Health - St. Mary's Emergency Room, and People Prep Academic Program. Most recently, I helped jump start a student organization on campus called Doctors Without Borders - UW Chapter, and I will be serving my second year on executive board.
- Worked as a tutor for children struggling in mathematics and reading at KUMON, and I am now a registered behavioral technician, providing ABA therapy for children with Autism.

Experience

  • University of Wisconsin-Madison

    Undergraduate Research Assistant

The Hanna Lab is researching methods to restore function post spinal cord injury. Currently, we are using peripheral nerve grafts as scaffolds for axonal growth in the spinal cord. We have developed a sustained drug delivery platform (through the use of micro-particles coated with growth factor) to deliver therapeutic proteins at the graft-spinal cord interface.

  • Kumon North America, Inc.

    Lead Tutor

As a lead tutor, I tutored children ranging from pre-K to 12th grade in the subject areas of literature/reading and mathematics. I helped children to harness powerful analytical thinking skills and refine approaches to reading and writing. I motivated students to have a sense of ownership and positive attitude towards studying, and ensure that they learned good studying techniques and different approaches to solving complex problems. Teaching children at KUMON with differing learning methods endorsed creativity, communication skills, and organizational skills.

  • Comfort Keepers

    Care Specialist

As a care specialist, I ultimately helped to maintain independence and the quality of life of seniors. My main duties included providing care services and living assistance that range from nutritional meal preparation, grooming, bathing, light housekeeping, companionship, and medicine reminders. Being a caregiver cultivated astute observational skills, communication skills, empathy, and bedside manners.

  • Mobile Therapy Centers of America

    RBT/ABA Therapist

As an applied behavior analysis therapist, I implement programs for children diagnosed exclusively with Autism. The programs increase language and communication skills, improve attention, focus, social skills, memory, and academics, and decrease the frequency of maladaptive behaviors. I work with toddlers to early adolescents. With children under age three, I provide them with a modified form of ABA which is much closer to play therapy than to discrete trials. As they master behaviors, I take children into real-world settings (schools, daycare, etc.) where they can generalize the behaviors they have learned and incorporate them into ordinary social experiences.

  • FETCO

    Customer Service Specialist

As a customer service specialist, I handled domestic and international calls, assisted those who inquired about product information, and responded to technical issues. I helped facilitate the management of paperwork regarding international/domestic sales and transactions and directed customers to specific sectors of the company.
