Because the greatest design opportunities are materials limited, engineers need to explore alternative approaches to spark innovation. Biomimicry is a non-conventional approach to innovation using nature’s functions to develop engineering solutions. I am leading a three-year project to integrate bioinspired design into the Skunk Works technology and product development process. I created a corporate-wide Engineering eForum on biomimicry and Nature Inspired Design SharePoint for the Skunk Works. Integrating biomimicry into the product and technology development process is not only an effective means of sparking innovation but also instills a culture of sustainable product design for engineers.

Experience

  • Santa Clarita Environmental Education Consortium

    Board Member

Volunteer to proactively provide educational resources to promote environmental literacy in the Santa Clarita Valley. Establish environmental resources for K-14 educators and students. Green STEM.

  • Honeywell

Manager, Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E)

Managed HS&E program for Allied Signal Aerospace Company (now Honeywell) to ensure worldwide compliance with government regulations and company policy. Managed the performance of and provided direction to more than 100 HS&E professionals at more than 60 US and international factory locations. Managed corporate environmental assurance and self-audit program, pollution prevention program, environmental data base systems, legislative and regulatory affairs, and remediation projects. Performed HS&E audits at dozens of facilities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Developed sector environmental goals and metrics.

  • Lockheed Martin

    Environmental Program Lead

Design for ESH, product stewardship, sustainability, pollution prevention (product substitution), integrating ESH into the business lifecycle, bioinspired design, employee culture change, environmental team lead, compliance, due diligence, risk assessment, DoD ESOH acquisition requirements, legislative/regulatory advocacy program, Go Green program, ISO 14001/ESH management system, material selection, NEPA/CEQA and community outreach.

  • General Dynamics

    Environmental Resources Manager

Developed the environmental program for General Dynamics, Space Systems Division. Operations included four manufacturing plants in San Diego, two space launch centers, and support facilities in Texas and Louisiana. Managed NEPA compliance work for several new commercial launch system programs. Developed RCRA and Hazwoper training programs. Implemented the “zero discharge” program: source reduction, underground storage tank removals and PCB transformer removals.
