As a Writing Center Consultant I worked with hundreds of undergraduate students (and dozens of graduate students) in consultations that focused on their writing projects. My job was not so much being a teacher

although many opportunities to teach good writing came up

but to be a general reader. As such

I would engage each client in a conversation about their writing assignment at every level of completion whether they were just getting started and needed some direction or had final draft that needed one last grammar check. This job necessitated being able to identify concerns and set achievable goals for each client in every session. It also required a kind of mental and intellectual flexibility that enabled me to reset after each consultation and adapt to each client’s needs and goals.

My duties here included various tasks germane to the History Division's mission. At the reference job

much of my time was spent searching through historical files to answer requests for information. I also spent a great deal of time working on orders of battle for Marines of the 4th Brigade in World War I

as well as Marines in the Dominican Republic. The job gave me great opportunities to research and conduct historical analysis for the benefit of civilians and Marines looking for information that only the History Division has. I was also given the opportunity to write certain pieces such as Corpsman vignettes and summations of Corps Issues of past Commandants.
