  and implemented a three-week Evolution and Biology of Sex Laboratory exercise investigating the adaptive significance of outcrossing verses extreme inbreeding through the Red Queen’s Hypothesis using the live animal microorganism Caenorhabditis elegans and bacteria Serratia marcescens in a host/parasite relationship. The objective is to assay mortality rates between obligately cross-fertilizing (or outcrossing) C. elegans (which are males and genetically modified females) and obligately self-fertilizing (of selfing) C. elegans (which are hermaphrodites genetically modified to reproduce solely hermaphrodites); both strains have been coevolving for 30 generations with coevolving bacteria.
