Experience

  • West Virginia University

    Graduate Teaching Assistant

Currently, I am in my sixth semester teaching English 101 and 102, West Virginia University’s Composition and Rhetoric courses. I am responsible for two sections, roughly 44 students, per semester.

    • Create the class curriculum and lesson plans based on the university’s course requirements.
    • Provide students with several stages of feedback within a portfolio system, a structure aimed at encouraging revision.
    • Incorporate outside reading, themes and technology to further the course goals.
o Build lesson plans around articles from The New York Times and TED Talks
o Utilize social media and blogging platforms in student assignments

  • True North Custom

    Copywriter

I created health care related content for proprietary and client marketing communications in print and online mediums. Our clients ranged from community hospitals to academic health systems around the country, for whom content involved both research and interviews.

    • Consistently carried a heavy writing load contributing to all of our clients’ titles, as well as serving on select teams of copywriters, editors and designers dedicated to priority clients.
    • Learned to pinpoint the creative potential in clients’ marketing objectives.
    • Transitioned from custom writing, which is geared toward a consumer audience, to business to business writing, in which clients target a physician audience.
o Expanded my range of technical writing into specialty medicine
o Refined my research and interviewing skills
    • Trained new hires on True North protocols and writing styles.

  • Nooga.com

    Lifestyle Reporter

I served as the lead lifestyle reporter for Chattanooga’s online newspaper. My beat included art, food, music, the literary and theater scenes and local events. As the sole reporter for my section, I generated an average of three articles a day to ensure both the lifestyle content and the newspaper, as a whole, remained up to date and engaging for our audience.

    • Launched recurring features, such as “The Daily Scene” and “Where in Chattanooga is Charlie,” in order to expand readership throughout the metropolitan area.
    • Cultivated and maintained contacts within the Chattanooga community.
    • Developed an ever-evolving story list for my section and coordinated coverage with my editors and fellow reporters.
    • Incorporated social media in my own reporting, such as live Instagram coverage of MainX24, and in the newspaper’s public profile by establishing and curating the Nooga.com Pinterest page.
