    Director of Special Initiatives

    Managed the start-up and development of programs for non-traditional students in partnership with CUNY literacy and youth-focused department leaders, as well as City Hall funders and workforce entities. Reporting to the Senior University Dean for Academic Affairs and the Dean of the School of Professional Studies.

    University Director, CUNY Start/Math Start

    Leads the University’s CUNY Start program based on a highly successful college transition initiative for students with significant developmental needs in writing, reading and math at eight CUNY campuses. CUNY Start is recognized for its innovative approach to developmental education and for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development and a supportive teacher approach that allow students to address multiple developmental needs over one semester. Direct the expansion of Math Start, CUNY's an intensive 8-to-10-week program, for students who need to increase their math proficiency before starting credit-bearing classes; growing the program from 2,000 to 4,000 students over the next year at nine CUNY campuses. Co-drafted the awarded proposal and launched CUNY's Foster Care Initiative (FCI) program, funded by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, to serve youth from NYC's foster care system at CUNY.

    Social Worker, Social Services for Children

    Counseled families and children in New York City’s foster care system. Provided case management services, including home and school visits, referrals to support services and monitoring of family progress. Presented cases to Family Court regarding extension of placement, return of child to parent, and termination of parental rights.

    Director, Post Employment Services

    Directed three post-employment programs for over 500 working parents who also received TANF (Temporary Assistant to Needy Families) and/or who were at 200% of the poverty level (program was known as Employment Plus or E-Plus).

    Launched and directed Welfare-to-Work initiatives for special needs clients: (1) PRIDE 2000 (Personal Roads for Individual Development and Employment, renamed WeCare), with a 3-year goal to serve over 16,000 clients who had physical, mental and developmental disabilities through workforce training, education and benefits planning and (2) POISED for Success (the Perfect Opportunity for Individual Skill and Educational Development) aimed to serve 1,700 women on welfare annually who were pregnant and/or had young children with the goals of improving parenting skills, maintaining good health and successfully reentering the workplace.

  • Institute for Community Inclusion, UMASS Boston

    Project Director

    Developed and implemented a $250,000 Microsoft grant to increase the hiring, retention and promotion of people with disabilities. Worked with leading employers and CEOs from The New England Council, a consortium of 350 New England Businesses, to engage the business community in Assistive Technology and Universal Design strategies that could help increase productivity for all employees.
