Biography

University of Wisconsin La Crosse - English

Associate Professor of English, Professional & Technical Writing at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse

IN SERVICE TO THE WISCONSIN IDEA
As a higher education professional in the University of Wisconsin System, I am guided by the Wisconsin Idea, where the boundaries of my campus are the boundaries of the state.

TEACHER-MENTOR
I take a decidedly rhetorical approach to teaching by constructing an experience for students through individual and collaborative learning, practical application, and community engagement projects. Most of my courses focus on professional and technical writing, and I always try to include connections between students’ lives and specific course material. My role as a teacher does not end at the classroom door; I work directly with students to help them connect classroom experiences to their post-graduate plans. The mentoring I provide connects to my pedagogical philosophy of adaptability and problem solving, where students are prepared to be thoughtful, engaged, and flexible citizens.

RESEARCH AND COMMUNITIES OF PRACTICE
My research interests focus on communities of practice in professional & technical writing, with a particular emphasis on content strategy in higher education, graphic design and rhetorical decision-making, and programmatic development. I want to know how professionals communicate, how they create communication deliverables and content, and why they make certain decisions along the way.
