Biography

University of Kansas - Slavic Languages Literatures

Language mind | Slavic domain expert (~400M speakers)
Krzysztof
Borowski
Lawrence, Kansas
Language mind. Expert in languages spoken by ~400 million people.
Specialties: conversation analysis, user-generated discourse, sociolinguistics, language data quality assurance.
Experience: 20+ years in language learning, 5+ years in linguistic research, 5 years in teaching language.

Languages are like engineering. They’re the ultimate creativity tool because they allow you to create something ex nihilo. If you put the pieces together correctly, there’s no stopping to what you can design — from a masterfully crafted sentence to a literary masterpiece, impressive website, or a slick piece of software.

Ever since I was a kid, languages have been my passion. Once I learned how to read and took the first German classes in pre-school, I have been on this adventure ever since. I still remember sitting at the desk and constructing my language at the age of 12 or 13. My passion for languages accelerated around college when I built a news website with HTML and CSS from scratch by analyzing multiple source codes and then rewriting bits and pieces for the website. While nobody creates websites like this anymore, I loved every second of the constant tinkering with the code to improve it. Oh, and I taught myself Italian along the way.

Hungry for more, I applied to a Ph.D. program in Slavic Linguistics, becoming a language researcher and educator. Few things in this world are more rewarding than seeing someone succeed in speaking a new language in a matter of weeks. In my research, I have explored issues in computer-mediated communication, critical discourse studies, sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and morphosemantics. In the meantime, I discovered the beauty of Python and natural language processing. Last spring, I was invited to Columbia University to speak about Silesian, a variety spoken in southern Poland.

Now, I’m looking for opportunities to use my skills and expertise to help make the world a better place through technology. As an INFJ, I value dedication, solid organization, helping people, solving problems, and working toward a greater goal. Feel free to connect or reach out if you want to talk about language, technology, or the intersection of the two.
