Biography

University of Saskatchewan - Geology

Learning & Development Specialist at University of Saskatchewan
Kim
West
Since I began teaching, the signature line on my outgoing emails has included a quote from author Joseph Campbell, “The job of the educator is to teach students to see the vitality in themselves.” This statement reminds me daily of what is most important to me as a teacher: seeking and understanding my students' authentic potential, purpose, and vitality.

The word “vitality” is often associated with being dynamic, strong, and full of energy. My authentic energy is vitalized through telling stories, sharing my passion for teaching, supporting graduate students, and engaging wholeheartedly in a holistic and critically reflective teaching practice. I aim to discover my students’ vitality through a responsive teaching approach and strengths-based mentorship. My goal is to contribute in some small way to a learning and workplace environment that builds and sustains rapport and holistic relationships with students and colleagues through the principles of listening, patience, empathy, sincerity, and trust.

Teaching & Research Areas of Interest or Specialty: graduate student and post-doc support, mentorship, programming, and development; trust; rapport; arts-based reflection; responsive teaching; holistic teaching; teaching philosophies; teaching portfolios; Canadian geography; natural hazards

  • A Holistic, Visual, and Kinesthetic Process for Expanding Horizons and Revealing the Core of a Teaching Philosophy

Collected Essays on Learning and Teaching, Volume 5

Revealing the core of a teaching philosophy is the key to a concise and meaningful philosophy statement, but it can be an elusive goal. This paper offers a visual, kinesthetic, and holistic process for expanding the horizons of self-reflection, self-analysis, and self-knowledge. Mystery montage, a variation of visual mapping, storyboarding, and collage, is utilized to uncover the core of a teaching philosophy and to challenge teachers to expand their horizons within a more holistic context. We share our personal reflections and experiences and conclude by discussing possible applications of this process to other areas of teaching and learning.

  • Poetic Re-presentations on Trust in Higher Education

Canadian Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

This article discusses using poetic transcription (Glesne, 1997) as a tool for examining trust, including what trust looks and feels like from the "lived experiences" (Richardson, 1992) of university educators. We present selected poems from different educators, and explore why poetry is ideally situated for broadening the horizons of educational research.
