Known as an extremely versatile musician, Karl Middleman is familiar to classical music audiences as a composer, lecturer, and conductor of many orchestras and choirs. The Suddeutsche Zeitung in Munich acclaimed Karl's conducting as “resolute and impressive.” “Energetic, vivid, and hugely satisfying,” praised the Turkish Times.In 1993 Middleman initiated a series of legendary concerts with the Philadelphia Classical Symphony mixing scholarship with showmanship. Middleman’s thematic concerts, lectures and presentations are noted for their spirited intellectual inquiry and for the bold, revelatory ways they reframe the classical music experience for seasoned as well as novice listeners.

    As a Commonwealth Speaker I have presented throughout the Pennsylvania area on topics including 'Leonard Bernstein -- American Idol, American Idealist', and 'Antonin Dvorak Sources of Inspiration in the New World Symphony' for radio and television audiences. I have also presented at numerous libraries and learning institutions.

    I enjoy diverse activities as conductor, educator and composer. With the Symphony I attempt to introduce new multidisciplinary ways to make the traditional concert experience relevant to new as well as experienced audiences.

    I have given over 300 public presentations before hundreds of audiences and student groups on such topics as Humor in Music, Beethoven the Creator, Mad for Italian Opera, America Dances with Fred Astaire, The Musical Vistas of America the Beautiful, and other diverse classical and popular music topics.These have received acclaim at the Philadelphia Orchestra and at dozens of colleges, libraries and learning institutions. The presentations mix scholarship with showmanship and are peppered with possibilities for audience participation, demonstrating that teaching classical music need not be rarified and exclusionary, but fun and exciting.

    A career educator, I have served on the faculties of Arcadia University, Cabrini, Philadelphia and Montgomery County Community Colleges and Temple University Music Prep. I also served as Arts Advocate and Trainer for the ‘Classroom Arts Project’ of Partners in Distance Learning, as well as Scholar in Residence for the South Jersey and Philadelphia Jewish Community Centers. Currently he is a Commonwealth Speaker for the Pennsylvania Humanities Council. I am a regular workshop leader for Pendle Hill Learning Center where teach courses on music and personal growth
