The common denominator in all my research is an examination of the ways that people with marginalized skin conditions (race

    class

    gender

    mark

    scar

disease) express their experiences. My current academic book project

Eczema and its Discontents in Art

examines chronic skin diseases and their co-morbid psychological and social effects. Many writers suffer skin conditions whose flare-ups frequently interrupt their work. Among these are Karl Marx

    Frida Kahlo

    Flannery O-Connor

    Zelda and Scott Fitzgerald

Elizabeth Bishop and John Updike. In the book I examine each artist

applying feminist-psycholinguistic theory--in addition to the newly emerging fields of psycho-dermatology

    skin studies

and disability studies--to my analyses of what I call the eczema aesthetic

the ways in which artists portray their experiences with skin disease in their works. \n\nThe Journal of Medical Humanities published an article based on this research

‘Drawing the Eczema Aesthetic: The Psychological Effects of Skin Disease in the Works of John Updike

    Elizabeth Bishop

and Zelda Fitzgerald.”\n\nIn addition to Eczema and its Discontents in Art

I also plan to publish my memoir

    Eczematic

which chronicles my own experiences with chronic eczema

    its treatment

    and discontents

and my own rendering of this aesthetic. I am now querying agents to help me secure a traditional publishing contract for this work. I hope that both the monograph and memoir will be ready for publication within the year. I’m also submitting chapters from both to journals for publication.
