Biography

University of North Texas - English

Assistant Professor of English at Illinois College
Kara
Dorris, PhD
Jacksonville, Illinois
Kara Dorris received an MFA in Creative Writing from New Mexico State University in 2009 and earned her PhD in English at the University of North Texas in 2016. Currently, she is a visiting assistant professor at Illinois College.

She writes to understand the world and her place within it, embracing Keats’ negative capability and quoting Rilke’s Letter to a Young Poet, especially when he writes, “have patience with everything that remains unsolved in your heart […] you need to live in question.” Currently she is writing a pedagogy essay about using civil disobedience to teach poetry as well as editing and managing an anthology of contemporary self-elegies. She writes across genres and is intrigued by hybrid texts, how expectations are subverted to create unique artifacts reflecting the world we live in.

Her full-length collection, Have Ruin, Will Travel, was published by Finishing Line Press (2019). Her second collection, When the Body is a Guardrail, is forthcoming in 2020. She has also published five chapbooks: Elective Affinities (dancing girl press, 2011), Night Ride Home (Finishing Line Press, 2012), Sonnets from Vada’s Beauty Parlor & Chainsaw Repair (dancing girl press, 2018), Untitled Film Still Museum (CW Books, 2019), and Carnival Bound [or, please unwrap me] (The Cupboard Pamphlet, 2020). Her poetry has appeared in Prairie Schooner, DIAGRAM, Nine Mile. Gold Wake Live, I-70 Review, Southword, Rising Phoenix, Harpur Palate, Cutbank, Hayden Ferry Review, Tinderbox, Puerto del Sol, The Tulane Review, and Crazyhorse, among others literary journals, as well as the anthology Beauty is a Verb (Cinco Puntos Press, 2011). Her prose has appeared in Wordgathering, Waxwing, and the anthology The Right Way to be Crippled and Naked (Cinco Puntos Press, 2016). She is also the founding editor of Lingerpost, an online journal.
