    Mathematics

September 1967 - September 1971 Thesis: “Bisection on Manifolds.” Adviser: Ed Spanier. Committee: Ed Spanier

    John Stallings

Engineering Department Professor Prelim Exams: algebra

analysis and topology; passed with honors Research Interests: My thesis research was in algebraic topology

specifically group actions on compact manifolds. In even dimensions

my solution only covered simply connected manifolds. Teaching Experiences: I was a teaching assistant in pre-calculus and calculus classes for two years. \n\nAcademic Experience University of Colorado

    Boulder

Department of Mathematics Visiting Assistant Professor

September 1970- September 1971 Research Interest: I completed and defended my dissertation on the “Bisection of Manifolds” and continued work in even dimensions where the fundamental group was not trivial. Teaching Experience: I taught calculus I and II in large lecture sections and an upper division class in topology for math majors\t\n   \nThe University of Texas at Austin

    Department of Mathematics Assistant Professor

September 1971 – August 1978 Associate Professor (tenured)

September 1978 – June 1979 Research Interest: I worked on a series of algebraic and geometric problems about group actions on compact manifolds. Most of the research was a collaborative effort with Gary Hamrick

James Vick and Pierre Conner. NSF grants funded my research for many of the years I was at UT. Teaching Experience: I taught introductory courses in pre-calculus

    calculus I and II

    linear algebra

    and abstract algebra

and both an undergraduate introduction to topology and a graduate class in algebraic topology. I developed a GRE and SAT prep class for the UT Division of Continuing Education aimed at students with “math anxiety.” I created a multiple choice test to measure proficiency in calculus I for a branch of the military.\n

Accomplishments: wptc recently celebrated its 25th anniversary; it has evolved through three overlapping stages.\n\n1987-1994: wptc initially concentrated on industry consulting on developments in telecommunications. We produced studies for major telecommunications and cable companies

including Southwestern Bell and AT&T. Our studies covered emerging technologies and consumer preferences for services that could be provided over networks. All of this work was pre-internet and focused mainly on innovations for the delivery of entertainment

especially movies. \n\n1991-2004: wptc expanded to include computer assisted redistricting for political subvisions; we began to specialize in geographic information systems (GIS) and became an ESRI business partner. We taught introductory and advanced classes on ESRI’s software offerings and developed an independent curriculum of GIS classes for our clients. I was a frequent guest lecturer at seminars

providing detailed overviews of GIS software. I implemented one of the first demonstrations of an internet map server using ESRI desktop products. \n\n2004-2012: Our current business has changed dramatically with the internet. GIS has moved from the desktop to the web and has become much more tightly coupled with business databases. We provide custom solutions using Google Maps

    SqlServer

and web browser development tools. Clients include state agencies and private businesses\n\nIn April of 2015

    wptc

    inc was formally closed.

    Founder

Accomplishments: I was successful at building long term relationships with clients as an expert on technical and financial issues associated with the design and performance of computer networks. I excelled at explaining new products and their value to customers. As a result

I was rapidly promoted from trainee

    to systems engineer

and to marketing representative. I received a rare in-place promotion to marketing manager. Awards: I achieved sales quota recognition every year and won several IBM Golden Circle awards for exceptional performance. As a manager

I received special recognition trips to New York

to attend executive presentations on the state of the company and its direction

and to IBM facilities in Sindelfingen

Germany for a one-week review of directions in IBM research.
