I also regularly took and disseminated minutes. My role changed from Graduate Student Member to Community Member upon graduation.

  • Fine Arts Association

    Visual Arts Faculty

At this community arts center in Willoughby, Ohio, I have designed and taught courses in visual art and culture for children, youth, and adults. Although I no longer teach regularly at Fine Arts, I occasionally offer classes and workshops in visual art at this multi-faceted school of creative learning.

The courses that I develop combine insights from the disciplines of art history and anthropology with the hands-on experience of studio art.

    Art instructor and workshop facilitator

I offer workshops designed to facilitate the participants' engagement with our shared creative heritage as well as their own inner resources. At the beginning of each workshop, we will set our intentions for the day. Then, within the safe space that we will create for our art-making, participants will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of materials as they cultivate their personal art practices. There will be opportunities for contemplation, tea, snacks, discussion, and sharing during the day. If possible, each workshop will include time to explore nature, in some way.

  • Self

    Independent Researcher

What are the meaningful connections that exist between human selves and the natural world? How have these connections been experienced, articulated, and expressed in images, objects, and structures created by men and women of the world's diverse cultures? Can the nuances of these meaningful connections be transmitted from person to person through creative works? If so, how? And what conditions are required?

What of the Presences, the Images that appear to us in our dreams, in moments of reverie, in works of art, in unexpected encounters at the margins or interstices of our daily lives? From where do they come? What messages do they bring? How do we best honor them?

These questions inform my research and reflection.

One area of deep interest concerns the interplay between the disciplines of art therapy and art history. I feel that these disciplines offer valuable perspectives into the meaning of art, and have much to offer one another.

I see art history as a means of linking each of us who makes or encounters art with every other person who has done the same, wherever or whenever that person may have lived. An intimate familiarity with the contexts in which art has been created can lead to insight into one's own life. Understanding the art of the world's many cultures can give us an appreciation for the varieties of human experience, and can enhance a person's esteem of both self and other. Encountering artworks directly can open a person to the creative source that flows within each of us.

And I see art therapy, with its emphasis on art-making as a pathway to healing and insight, offering much to art historians who want to more deeply understand the inner lives of those who make art, engage with art, and cultivate the therapeutic qualities of art. Also, art therapy's understanding of works of art as road maps of inner worlds can help illuminate the meanings of artworks, adding new insight to the academic study of images and objects.

  • Cuyahoga Community College

    Adjunct Professor

Since Spring 2017, I have taught Art Appreciation (ART 1010) during Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters, and Survey of Non-Western Art (ART 1040) during the Spring semester at Cuyahoga Community College.

Teaching Art Appreciation allows me to engage my students in the exploration of art through the processes of close observation, contemplation, analysis, articulation, and creation. Students who participate in the Survey of Non-Western Art begin a journey into other cultures and become acquainted with diverse ways of creating, utilizing, and assigning meaning to images and objects. It is a privilege and a delight to share these adventures with my students.

  • SPACES (Gallery)

As a member of the programming committee at Spaces Gallery in Cleveland, I participated in the process of reviewing artists' submissions, co-curated one exhibition - Internal Compasses - and photographed an artist's experiential project.

Publications

  • “The Feeling of Presence in Mediated Art Experiences.”

Proceedings of the Eighth Annual International Meeting of the Presence Workshop

This paper examines the possibility for presence to inform the development and study of new media art. The paper links the concepts of art spaces, new media art, and presence. The authors argue that presence has already been incorporated into new media art and that such a union offers social scientists as well as artists a unique opportunity to study the interaction of these areas. The paper concludes by posing several research questions and has the potential to be a rich area of research.
