  Luther Calvin Furst risked his life to carry crucial messages to Union commanders. But his finest hour came in Pennsylvania

  where

  as a member of the U.S. Army Signal Corps

  he waved flags to send coded messages from the heights of Big Round Top

  well above the Gettysburg battlefield.
