Biography

Hillsborough Community College - Dale Mabry Campus - Communication

Associate Professor & Campus Coordinator for CSU's Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$)
J. Jacob
Jenkins (Dr. J)
Camarillo, California
J. Jacob Jenkins (Ph.D., Communication; B.A., Architecture) is an Associate Professor of Organizational Communication and Campus Coordinator for CSU's Affordable Learning Solutions (aka, "openCI").

As Campus Coordinator for openCI, Jenkins has helped establish CSUCI as a national leader in textbook affordability, saving students nearly $4 million dollars over the past three years. In 2018, he also helped CSUCI pioneer the first three undergraduate "Z-Majors" in the entire CSU system - and perhaps in the entire nation (i.e., majors that don't require the purchase of a single textbook). And in 2020, CSUCI introduced the CSU's first "Z-Cred" and "Z-Track" (i.e., a credential program in Special Education and degree track in Nursing that also don't require the purchase of a single textbook).

For his efforts to reduce educational barriers faced by historically underserved students, Jenkins was awarded the Ventura County Leadership Academy’s 2019 "Educational Leader of the Year,” CSUCI's 2019 "President's Award for Innovation in Teaching & Learning," CASE's 2019 "Gold Circle of Excellence Award," and National Communication Association's 2018 "Engaged Scholar Service Award." In addition, Jenkins was recently chosen as one of Pacific Coast Business Times' "40 Under 40" and as a Research Fellow for the Open Education Group and William & Flora Hewlett Foundation.

In addition to his role as openCI Campus Coordinator, Jenkins has published over 50 academic articles, book chapters, and reference works on student equity, collaboration, and innovation - including a book entitled "The Diversity Paradox: Seeking Community in an Intercultural Church" (Lexington Books, 2016).

Jenkins has taught full-time since 2005. He was selected for the National Communication Association's "Teachers on Teaching Spotlight Series” in 2016; he was selected as a Finalist for CSUCI's "Maximus Teaching Award” in 2015, 2017, and 2019.

Jenkins currently lives within walking distance of the ocean with his wife and their two children. He has a passion for travel, having visited 6 continents and 30 countries. During his free time, he enjoys film, live music, spicy food, and stimulating conversation.
