Hugh Alexander has taught at the collegiate level for more than twenty-four years. He has played an integral part in course development and maintenance of academic standards of the Illustration department - including the development of rubrics, course assignments and curricula – since he joined the Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design. He has developed a series of classes that aide the development of artistic skills of students.

Additional duties include acting as a mentor for new faculty. His recently gave presentations on "The Worst First Day of Class: How to Be Prepared." Another popular workshop was "On How to Critique Student Artwork." Additional topics have included the preparation of portfolio content and how to price artwork.

He loves teaching and helping students obtain their goals of becoming professional artists.

    Full Professor of Illustration

    Throughout his numerous years of collegiate teaching, Hugh has designed courses, developed assignments, and created rubrics for course content and student evaluations. He has taught more than 27 different courses for the Illustration, Graphic Design, Foundations, and Continuing Education Departments. During this time, he has taught more than 646+ college students, helped them to develop their artistic skills, and has guided them into their chosen career in art.

    An active member of the Curriculum Committee, (current co-chair) for over thirteen years. Additional duties include, in-out-of-state student recruitment to National Association Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) Portfolio Days in North America, attending 27 separate Portfolio Days. For the past 14 years, Alexander has been an advisor, both formally & informally, for students in their academic and professional pursuits. He has served on numerous search committees for upper management positions, and has served as a member and led Faculty Development and Faculty Forum-Senate Committees.

    Hugh is the Career Advisor-Business Resource leader for Illustrators. He gives of his time to help students prepare their portfolios and assists in starting their art careers. Marketing, self promotion and business issues are all topics he assists the students with in the education of the arts.

    Hugh is a co-founder of the "Red Shoe Tribe." This group is a community building component that has Illustration faculty & students interact with each other building the awareness in the importance of illustration.

    Creative Industry Week, 2016, an example of Hugh's business & negotiation skills. "What Are You Worth?" was a very popular seminar.
    A presentation on the "Art of the Critique"​ to fellow faculty members through the Center for Professional Development & Learning Innovations.

    Recently honored with the "2013 Arty," an award given to the most popular faculty by students. Hugh received this award in 2012-11, 2007.

  • Turner Art Gallery, Carson Art Gallery

    Master Picture Framer and Archival Art Restoration

    Hugh worked at these two art galleries in a variety of different capacities. During his employment periods he was the manager of frame and restoration department. He led a group of team members in the professional production of custom frames, mats, hand wrapped fabric mats, inlaid fillets, glass and plexi-glas cutting, plexi-glas box construction, and complex archival art presentation. Construction of cardboard and wooden shipping crates.

    Additional duties include display, presentation, sales, promotion & artists selection. He aided the gallery owners in presentation of artwork, lighting display and gallery flow and historical perspective arrangements. He assisted with advertisements of upcoming shows and verbally explained to art patrons the purpose, techniques and historical significance of the artwork.

  • J. Paul Getty Museum

    Artifact Restoration Assistant - Conservator

    Artifact Restoration Assistant. Worked on restoration & permanent exhibit design of Hellenistic (400-100 BC Greek Civilization, Alexander the Great conquests) figurines. Ceramic figurines and utilitarian vessels were cleaned and repaired. Layers of soil and deposition material were removed from the surface of objects with tools and cleansing agents. A microscope was necessary for particularly detailed surface cleansing.

    Specializing in advertising illustrations for Fortune 500 companies. Representational images produced in traditional acrylic and gouache paints on silk fabric. As a freelance Illustrator working for major advertising agencies and design studios, he has had the benefits of creating imagery for numerous agencies and corporate campaigns.
