Columbus, Ohio
I am the Bob and Mary Reusche Chair in Geographic Information Science, Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Analysis, and Professor of Geography at The Ohio State University. I am also a Courtesy Professor in the Department of City and Regional Planning, an Affiliated Faculty of the Translational Data Analytics Institute, and a member of the Faculty Advisory Board of the Sustainability Institute, where I co-lead the Smart and Resilient Communities research program.

My research and teaching interests are at the intersection between geographic information science and transportation science, in particular, the analysis of human mobility patterns within cities and regions. The major empirical questions driving my research include sustainable transportation, livable cities, and the relationships between human mobility, health and social equity.

In addition to over 150 scientific publications, I am the author (with Shih-Lung Shaw) of Geographic Information Systems for Transportation: Principles and Applications (Oxford University Press), and editor (with Jiawei Han) of Geographic Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery, second edition (CRC Press). I am also an Associate Editor of the journal Geographic Analysis and serve on the editorial board of other top journals in Geographic Information Science, spatial analysis and transportation.

Awards and honors include the Hewings Award for Outstanding Young Scholar from the North American Regional Science Council (1997), the Edward L. Ullman Award for Outstanding Contributions to Transportation Geography from the Association of American Geographers (2009) and the Research Award for scholarly contributions to Geographic Information Science from the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science (2015).

    Professor of Geography

My research and teaching focus on the applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and spatial analytic techniques to study things that move in geographic space - in particular, humans within cities. I am also interested in individuals' use of transportation and communication technologies to generate mobility and accessibility, and the implications for sustainable transportation systems, livable communities and public health.
