University of Saskatchewan - Nutrition

Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics, College of Pharmacy and Nutrition, University of Saskatchewan
Higher Education
Gordon
Zello
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada
Gordon A. Zello, Ph.D.

I am a Professor of Nutrition in the College of Pharmacy and Nutrition at the University of Saskatchewan (UoS) [http://www.usask.ca], Canada. I moved to Saskatoon after completing graduate studies at the University of Toronto and The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto.

I have an active graduate (>30 students and Post-Doctoral Fellows completed or in progress) and research program in both basic and applied nutrition. My fields of specialization are intermediary metabolism and nutritional assessment. Research interests include the measurement of body composition, energy expenditure, metabolism, athletic performance, and nutrient requirements in healthy (e.g. human lifespan, athletes) and clinical populations (e.g. metabolic syndrome, diabetes, parenteral nutrition, PCOS, IBD, D-lactic acidosis in animals). Recent work has included assessing the knowledge, attitudes and beliefs towards dairy and pulse consumption, as well as promoting the health benefits of pulses as part of the Canadian diet and abroad. International work includes nutrition/food security and One Health initiatives in Ethiopia, Bangladesh and Peru. I have published over 100 scientific articles and review papers, and have given over 100 conference presentations.

In addition to being a teacher-scholar, I have been engaged in college and university administration with expertise in university governance, student affairs, tenure and promotion standards and faculty/university collegial processes (e.g. Chair of Governance, International Activities and Scholarships & Awards Committees of University Council, Assistant Dean of Nutrition & Dietetics). I also am involved in a number of outreach and engagement activities and volunteer to various professional organizations.

    Visiting Lecturer

I have been teaching the Clinical Nutrition Course to students in the Masters of Applied Human Nutrition (MAHN) program at Hawassa University (http://www.hu.edu.et/hu/), Awassa, Ethiopia since 2008.

From this graduate program and our research collaborations with the Agricultural Colleges at both Hawassa University and the University of Saskatchewan, we have been examining nutrition and food security in Southern Ethiopia. The research has been supported by the International Development Research Centre, Canada (IDRC) and Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada via the Canadian International Food Security Research Fund (CIFSRF) and builds on our previous CIFSRF project "Improving Food Security in the Highlands of Ethiopia through Improved and Sustainable Agricultural Productivity and Human Nutrition".

For more information on the overall aims of the research and graduate student/faculty projects visit our website "Improving Nutrition in Ethiopia Through Plant Breeding and Soil Management" found in the Projects Section below.
