  styles and movements in Northern California art from the turn of the century to the present. Explore topics such as the question of whether or not there is a unique quality about Bay Area art that distinguishes it from work made in other American art centers such as New York City

Gain familiarity with important Bay Area movements such as the Society of Six; the San Francisco School of Abstract Expressionism; Bay Area Figuration; the influence of European Surrealism on regional artists; the jazz influenced work of the Beats (assemblage and collage); the photographs of Ansel Adams

  Imogene Cunningham

  and Edward Weston and the f-64 group; Funk Art; and the ceramic revolution led by Peter Voulkos. You also study the current ascendance of performance

  conceptual brand new media work that has brought the Bay Area renewed international attention.\n\nFIGURE PAINTING ART X437 Fall 2015\nInvestigate both perceptual and conceptual approaches to painting the figure. Using oil or acrylic paints

  you learn methods of painting the figure using dynamic 2-D composition

  color and expressive techniques. Intensive weekly painting sessions working with a model combine with slide-illustrated lectures

  demonstrations

  readings and critiques help improve your practical mastery and theoretical understanding. We will be working directly from a model in class and exploring the techniques of Grisaille and Alla Prima painting as well as other expressive techniques.

  Starting in 1985 I began my tenure at the Triton Museum of Art as the Exhibition Preparator and Registrar. In 1986 I was appointed the Curator of Art on top of my continuing duties as Preparator and Registrar. In 1994 I served as Acting Director and Curator of Art before taking on the duties of Assistant Director & Chief Curator in 1995. In 1997 I was appointed the Executive Director & Chief Curator. From 2005 to 2013 I served as the Executive Director and Senior Curator. Currently I serve on the Triton Museum of Art Advisory Board.
