From around 1989 Chris has specialized in the study of the economics of technology, international trade, economic growth and methodological issues in economics. In addition to research and teaching, he has worked as a consultant (2003 – 2009).on economic policy reform, trade capacity building and technology upgrading for competitiveness. He has carried out consulting assignments for UNIDO, USAID and the World Bank, in Sri Lanka, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Rwanda. In Saudi Arabia he worked as the principal international consultant on a major UNIDO- Saudi project to boost competitiveness and diversify Saudi industry to reduce dependence on petroleum and petro- derivatives. In Sri Lanka and Rwanda he worked on post-conflict reconstruction. In Egypt he trained officials at the Ministry of Trade and Industry in trade policy analysis.

Chris taught economics at graduate and post-graduate levels (1994 - 2003) in Singapore and the United States. His research areas cover economic growth, technological change and trade policy modelling with computable general equilibrium models .

His initial training and work experience was in electrical engineering and business management, in Sri Lanka; he worked there as a marketing executive for IBM, as a business consultant for the leading management institute and as a university teacher of electrical engineering.
