• As a volunteer with the Vertebrate Zoology Department: Division of Fishes

  my roles included: separating fish from multi-lot housing into individual jars; re-shelving cataloged specimens; organizing the fish in the glycerin collection at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum; preparing fish for shipment to various international museums; mixing an ethanol and thymol solution to help prevent the spread of bacteria in the fish kept in glycerin.

  I worked on taking pictures and X-rays of holotype fish specimens starting with Family 1 of 324. The images were edited using Adobe Photoshop and uploaded onto a flash drive

  to then be uploaded onto the Smithsonian’s global fish database. The goal of this project was to make images more readily available to scientists all over the world.

The project focused on the gastric mill of the Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus). Research is being done to learn more about the morphology of the gastric mill throughout the blue crab’s life and how it is affected by molting
