    Research Initiation Award: Uncertainty Modeling

    Probabilistic Models

and Life-cycle Reliability of Floating Offshore Wind Turbine

    $300K (PI)

The research objectives of this project are (1) to understand the uncertainties existed in the FOWT structures

    (2) to predict the structural behavior and life-cycle structural reliability of FOWT

and (3) to obtain safety factors for structural design of FOWT that uniquely considers uncertainties and coupled dynamics of aerodynamics of the wind turbine and hydrodynamics of the floating body under extreme environmental loads which U.S. ocean is subject to. To achieve the objective

the task includes to (a) investigate the nature of and model the uncertainties within its structures

    hydrodynamics

and the environmental loads along its life time. (b) By implementing the uncertainties found

the probabilistic capacity and demand models for structural components of FOWT will be developed (c) The developed models will be objectively used to estimate the life-cycle structural reliability and to obtain the safety factors for the base tower moment and shear forces of FOWT.

CREST Center for Energy & Environmental Sustainability (Phase II)

    $5M (CO-PI)

Center for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES) Phase II research addresses challenging interdisciplinary problems

paving the way for scientific and technological breakthroughs in energy engineering to meet short- and long-term national needs. Center research is organized into three subprojects (SPs). SP I will focus on production of bioenergy crops with treated produced water and generation of biomass-based hydrocarbon fuels. SP II will conduct research to improve the feasibility and reliability of Offshore Wind Energy generation. SP III will employ process engineering and stochastic methods to enhance sustainability of fossil fuel energy sources.
