Professor O'Hara is one of the great things about Augustana University. You will receive a liberal experience from him. But you need to be engaged in dozens of pages of readings per week and be willing to participate. Otherwise, you'll get bored. In his class, grades become irrelevant, where you acquire knowledge. At some point, I suggest you must take his courses no matter what.

I studied Ocean and Coastal Law in order to enhance my teaching of environmental philosophy. It was a brilliant class

and I think it's likely I'll take more classes at VLS in the future. I'm not seeking a degree; I'm just seeking to learn more. Good policies make a big difference.

The Asociación Bio-Itzá is a small NGO run by a handful of Itzá Maya living in northern Guatemala. Through ecotourism and Spanish language instruction for foreigners

they work to preserve a small section of the Maya Biosphere Reserve and to pass on their traditional knowledge of the neotropical forest. My role is miniscule in comparison to theirs

    but I enthusiastically support them

and consult with them several times a year about increasing the scope of their work

especially in developing sustainable forestry and agriculture practices
