► WHAT I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT

Empowering underrepresented students to find success. I have dedicated my career to be instrumental in achieving equity for all students by offering high quality pathway programs, courses, and mentorship that will ensure student empowerment and success in higher education. I purposefully center the cultural wealth, values, and aspirations of diverse students and their families to advance student equity across the P-20 (preschool through graduate or professional school) system.

My passion for student success, data-driven decision making, and my strategic leadership, has lead me to be appointed and invited to lead, create, and manage initiatives that increases college readiness, retention, and success of underrepresented students in higher education. I am committed to making sure our students become the next generation of leaders and professionals that will contribute to the growth, prosperity, and future success of our communities.

► MY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

• Initiated, implemented, and directed numerous P-20 programs, conferences, and workshops bringing entire communities together (community leaders, teachers, parents/guardians, and students), promoting the promise of college readiness, access, and overall success of its participants.

• Appointed and/or invited to lead and/or participate in local and state education equity committees, programs, and initiatives, such as CSULA, ELAC, and LAUSD GO East LA; the Innovation, Curriculum, & Assessment Committee; and the bipartisan California State Bar Commission on Access to Justice.

• Developed and taught 11 highly-rated undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses, as well as supervised, advised, and/or mentored undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.

    Participated in planning for and translation of 8 day-long summer orientation sessions and materials for Spanish-speaking families, serving as liaison / advisor regarding students’ transition to college.

    • Developed curriculum and content for orientation and financial aid workshops.

    • Administered orientation and financial aid workshops in Spanish as part of CAMP orientation.

    • Provided culturally relevant and interactive campus tours that engaged incoming students and their families in the college going process.

    FACULTY OUTREACH PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR, GREATER OUTCOMES FOR EAST LOS ANGELES (GO EAST LA)

    Appointed to build new student higher ed programming and to cultivate and sustain engagement with East LA community, ELAC, LAUSD feeder schools, and business partners such as Grifols Worldwide.

    • Collaborated with multiple stakeholders across P-20 pipeline throughout greater LA region, promoting greater academic outcomes for students beginning in early childhood.

    • Created and facilitated parent, student, event for 250 participants; developed workshop content, secured guest speakers, and coordinated participation by elementary, middle, and high school families and students.

    • Presented programming in English and Spanish to increase awareness among students, families, and secondary educators about Pathway programs with guaranteed University admissions.

    • Shared responsibilities in leading, supervising, and facilitating weekly check-in meetings with 10-15 research assistants, interns, and community engagement volunteers.

    PROGRAM COORDINATOR, DOCTOR OF EDUCATION IN POSTSECONDARY EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP

    Charged with curriculum and programming evaluation, monitoring, and development to ensure students were not only truly prepared to meet the needs of the region, state, and industries, but also all short-term and long-term decisions and changes were data-driven.

    ► DATA-DRIVEN ANALYSIS
    • Personally compiled and analyzed research to identify issues/obstacles and create programming changes to respond to the needs of all stakeholders.
    • Established and worked cooperatively with 10-member advisory committee of students, faculty, administrators, and community members.

    ► CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT
    • Envisioned, analyzed, planned, and directed sustainable, first-ever 3-year postsecondary leadership specialization for the Charter College of Education, facilitating transition from planning, curriculum approval to launch, overseeing daily program operations.
    • Wrote core curriculum and defined student learning outcomes, designed schedule of classes, created integrated assignments, and integrated dissertation-specific milestones to meet degree goals.

    ► STUDENT RETENTION
    • Focused on helping students graduate on time (reversing increasing time-to-degree completion rate); retained all first-year students to second year, all meeting and passing dissertation milestones on time with one year to finish.
    • Admitted 17 doctoral students in 1st year cohort (100% retention) adding another cohort in 2nd year, generating close to $1M since startup.

    ► ABOUT ME
    I am a scholar-practitioner, one who uses research to inform my practice. I am up to date with higher education research, and continue to do research on issues pertaining to equity, access, and the success of underrepresented students throughout the P-20 (preschool through graduate or professional degree) pipeline.

    Two areas of focus defining my work are:
    (1) examining and addressing issues surrounding the navigation, transition, and educational outcomes of urban, low-income, and first generation Latina/o students in higher education, and
    (2) identifying best practices that acknowledge parent and family engagement in P-12 schools and higher education.

    ► ABOUT MY BUSINESS
    Assist nonprofits in their efforts to build relationships and strengthen collaboration within the nonprofit sector, communities, and families and students of Southeast Los Angeles (SELA).

    • SELA Collaborative: Authored and submitted proposal to and received $50K in grant funding from the Weingart Foundation to document origin and evolution of the SELA Collaborative and its impact on SELA community; focus on sustainability and replication methods.

    • Nonprofit Families in Schools: Analyze the California School Dashboard to determine effectiveness in measuring parent engagement in support of student educational success.

    • College Ready – LA County Libraries: Solicited and received approval for 2 community workshops to help parents, students, guardians, and adults prepare and apply to college. Program expansion is pending.
