    This special project

    “What’s in the Air

    ” is a collaboration between journalism and geology students from San Diego State University along with inewsource

    a nonprofit news organization. They will experiment with the concept of using electronic sensors to test air quality in San Diego in an effort to help the public be more informed about pollution and its impact on the city.\n\n--\nSteve Birch

    PhD\nA biomedical engineer with a diverse background

    Dr. Birch provides technical support in the creation and use of the sensor systems used by the students

    as well as data collection interfaces. When not playing with sensors and computers

    he can be found working in a number of areas related to humanitarian assistance/disaster response

    geographic information systems

    electronic medical records and medium-to-big data. His involvement with the San Diego Regional Firefighters Wellness program further spurs his interest in air quality monitoring technologies

    especially in the context of our seasonal wildland fires and protecting the health of first responders through affordable situational awareness sensor platforms.
