I am committed to helping people tap into their strengths in order to overcome challenges and thrive in their educational, relationship, career, and life goals.

I've spent the last 12 years working with diverse individuals and groups in higher education, career services, national perinatal and parental health institutes, and internationally recognized medical schools. Along the way, I gained an expertise in motivating people and organizations to access their best potentials as professionals, parents, and graduate students so they can thrive in the face of life's challenges.

As a professional, I specialize in:

-Providing tailored, strength based, solution focused, counseling, coaching, and consultation to individuals, organizations, and groups.

- Empowering professionals, college/graduate students, parents, to overcome executive functioning, sleep deprivation/insomnia, learning, and ADHD so they can thrive in life.

-Supporting women and men to effectively cope with the stress, anxiety, and the changes in identity that come with becoming a parent.

-Teaching groups and leaders to explore, identify, and utilize their best parts for building stronger relationships with diverse clients, patients, and work-teams.

-Delivering advanced psycho-educational, strength-focused, and learning needs assessments as well as consultation to students and professionals.

Publications

  • Expanding the Discourse: A Dual Model of Working for Women (and Men’s) Lives

    Sense Publishers

"A dual model of working expands the traditional meaning of work beyond work that is paid. It represents an extension of the counseling for work and relationship perspective that posits two major contexts of work, market work and unpaid care work, in addition to relationship contexts through which people co-construct their lives."

  • Diversity, Religiosity, and Spirituality in the Workplace

Journal of Management, Spirituality & Religion

"Starting with an almost back-to-basics approach, Mattis and Schaeffer reconsidered the foundational definitions of work and diversity, before examining the intersection between religion, spirituality and the workplace...In terms of legal consequences, Schaeffer and Mattis noted that in the last 12 years, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) complaints based on religious bias have increased 69% - a rate that surpasses race, national origin or sex discrimination complaints. This has cost businesses $7.6 million in settlements alone. Despite these figures, only half of companies in the USA are training managers in religious and spiritual diversity issues and only 37% are training employees to respect these specific differences in the workplace." -Deloitte, USA research review, December 2012

  • From Work and Family to a Dual Model of Working

    Oxford University Press

"A dual model of working for men and women across the lifespan encompassing market work and unpaid care work is proposed for the psychology of working. This dual model of working is based on a single adult worker model for the market economy, an analysis of the linkages among market work, unpaid care work, and paid care work, and a broad definition of unpaid care work applicable to all. This chapter suggests that this dual model of working will contribute to the ability of people to co-construct lives worth living and to the amelioration of prevailing gender and social inequities."
