O'Connell, PhD
Greater New York City Area
Dr. Christine O'Connell is a driven, passionate and creative leader with years of experience providing strategic direction and growing non-profit and academic organizations, research initiatives, and environmental and community campaigns. She is a leading expert in science communication, including building innovative programs and curriculum at the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science and speaking worldwide on empathetic communication, improvisation and connection, storytelling, science policy, and diversity and women in STEM. Dr. O'Connell is a sought-after communication, leadership, media, and speech coach and public speaker. She has trained thousands of scientists and medical professionals around the world to communicate with clarity and empathy, and taught at NASA, Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Caltech, Stanford, Google's Re:Work, and The National Academies.

Dr. O'Connell worked to develop the Alda Center from its inception and was personally trained by Alan Alda in improv, being one of the first scientists to test the idea that improv could make you a more effective communicator. She helped create the Alda Method and delivered international attention and praise to the Alda Center as a pre-eminent center in the field of science communication. She led the growth and development of two of the Alda Center’s most important programs: external workshops and the Flame Challenge science communication contest.

As a marine and environmental scientist, professor, and advocate, she continuously works to strengthen the connections between science, society and policy. Dr. O'Connell's current research focuses on women in STEM, environmental communication, science policy, and best practices in science communication.

Experience

  • Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science

Science Communcaiton Professor and Founding Associate Director

International lecturer on science communication, engagement, storytelling, and improvisation, where I develop projects and curriculum for scientists, industry leaders, educators, and students. As an Assistant Professor of science communication at SBU's School of Journalism and Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science, with affiliate appointments in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences, Women in Science and Engineering, and Institute for Advanced Computational Science at Stony Brook University, I teach and develop undergraduate and graduate curriculum in science communication, improvisation for scientists, science policy, and communication and empowerment for women in STEM. My research includes challenges and opportunities for women in STEM and best practices in science communication and evaluation.

As the Founding Associate Director (2012-2017) at the Alda Center I helped develop The Alda Method and curriculum, and led the development, organizational and financial growth of the workshop program that has now trained over 12,000 scientists internationally. I led the growth of initiatives such as The Flame Challenge, an international science communication contest, doubling the number of student judges to 27,000 worldwide (flamechallenge.org); developed the Alda Center web, social media and outreach strategy and team; and pioneered new workshops, graduate courses, and an annual Science Communication Bootcamp. I developed partnerships with universities, donors, agencies and foundations, and assisted with strategic planning, communications, and organizational development.
