I worked with Terry H. Anderson on my dissertation titled

\"The Right Response: The Reaction of the Silent Majority to the Social Movements of the Sixties.\" The decade is generally taught from a liberal perspective that focuses on the protests

because historians like to talk about change. But what about the rest of the American population that was not protesting? How did they feel about the movements

and what did they do about them? I analyzed the different responses to the civil rights movement

the spread of liberalism on campuses through the New Left

    antiwar protests

    race riots

    counterculture

and feminism. Moderates and conservatives used other methods like counter-protests and letter-writing to their elected politicians to get their voice heard

since the media focused on the more visible protests. The reaction to the increasing radicalism of the protesters led to a new conservatism that Americans willingly embraced.
