Biography

Georgia State University - Psychology

Clinical Practicum Student at Southern Indiana Rehab Hospital
Hospital & Health Care
Brian G.
Collin, Ph.D.
Louisville, Kentucky Area
I earned my PhD in Educational Psychology in December 2014 from the University of Alabama. For my Graduate Assistantship at Alabama, I taught two undergraduate level study skills courses. As a study skills instructor, I preached the testing effect to my students which is the proven principle that taking practice tests is the best way to increase performance on the actual test. Many of my students did not have good practice tests to study, so I came up with a method to help them build multiple choice practice tests based on defining and categorizing key terms. I decided to turn this method into a software program, called Learn My Test (www.learnmytest.com) which launched in April 2017. Learn My Test is currently in the R&D phase and looking for funding to advance to the next stage of product development. I love the process of building software and am always thinking of software solutions for everyday problems within psychology, health, and education.

During my time as a PhD student, I conducted research on familial influences on cognitive moral development. I presented my work at several regional and international conferences and was awarded best paper of Division H at the 2013 Midwestern Educational Research Association Conference. My paper on Parental Divorce and Moral Judgment Development was published in the Journal of Divorce and Remarriage in the February 2014 edition.

During my time as a PhD student at Alabama, I also worked part time for a forensic neuropsychologist, Dr. John R. Goff. I discovered my love for psychological assessment while working for Dr. Goff. Since my PhD did not qualify me to practice psychology, I decided to leave my full time job as a Policy Analyst for the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning in August 2017 to pursue a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology with a concentration in Health Psychology at Spalding University. My goal is to open a private practice doing neuropsychological assessment.

Publications

  • The Effects of Parental Divorce on the Moral Judgment Development of Freshman and Sophomore College Students

    Journal of Divorce and Remarriage

This research investigated the effects of parental divorce on the moral judgment development of freshman and sophomore college students (N = 377). Freshmen with divorced parents had lower scores of moral judgment development than freshmen with married parents, whereas sophomores with divorced parents had higher moral judgment development scores than sophomores with married parents. It was also found that an experience changing homes in childhood or adolescence was negatively associated with moral judgment development for freshmen but positively associated with moral judgment development for sophomores. It was concluded that the change of environment associated with a parental divorce could enhance moral judgment development growth in the early years of college.
