I feel like Prof. Sum is more dedicated to his research than to his students, but he's honestly one of the smartest profs I've ever taken. If you're up for a challenging class, take him. You'll really learn a lot from him than with any other prof.

My academic research is focused on the encompassing areas of phases and flow, ranging from phase transition, phase equilibria, and phase properties to flow dynamics, rheology, and multiphase flow. The research focus on a number to phases including gas hydrates, wax, asphaltenes, and scale, in particular in the context of flow assurance for oil and gas production. In the Phases to Flow Lab, we have a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from experimental to modeling to simulations. We work closely with industry as well as many other academic research groups throughout the world.
