Biography

California State University East Bay - Biology

Associate Scientist - Arational Strain Engineering at Intrexon Corporation
Biotechnology
Abigail
Damico
San Francisco Bay Area
I have laboratory experience combining microbiology and molecular biology to generate and test individual constructs and libraries within a methane bioconversion platform. Some techniques that I have performed in order to generate the libraries and constructs are mutagenesis, genomic editing, PCR, yeast assembly, E. coli transformations through heat shock, electroporation, strain banking, small scale strain testing (including biochemical assays), BLAST searches, and microscopy. My work is performed at a high-throughput scale and requires the use of automation, plate arrays, cross-departmental coordination, aseptic technique, and extreme attention to detail.

The high quality of my Master’s thesis was recognized with three separate research grants and selection to the annual system wide Graduate Student Research Symposium on two separate occasions. In addition to my Master’s degree, I hold a certificate from Coursera in Python for Everybody, and a certificate from the University of California, Berkeley from their Clinical Laboratory Scientist Preparatory Program.

Experience

  • California State University, Easy Bay

    Teaching Assistant

I taught undergraduates general microbiology, general biology, and anatomy and physiology laboratory classes. I made sure proper safety protocols were being followed, and that the experiments were being run according to the protocol. I also assisted with proctoring exams, grading exams, creating syllabi and other coursework, and helped the students with any questions that they may have.

  • California State University, East Bay

    Student

I was working to obtain my Masters in Biological Sciences with an Emphasis in Microbiology. While there, I was working in a lab studying scorpion microflora.

  • California State University, East Bay

    Laboratory Assistant

Intern position that focused on isolating bacteriophage by means of making and streaking plates, performing plaques, isolating DNA, and gel electrophoresis

  • Intrexon Corporation

Associate Scientist - Arational Strain Engineering

Manage projects to ensure they successfully go through design, build, transformation, testing, and fermentation. This includes communicating and coordinating with multiple teams across Intrexon. Some of these teams include Computational Biology, IT, Strain Construction, Strain Baking, Screening Operations, NGS, Automation, Fermentation, and Core Lab Support. Work as the safety liaison between our team and lab support.

Help generate large libraries through StAGE, UV mutagenesis, and overexpression libraries to increase tolerance and production. This includes working with a combination of automation (Biomek FX and Labcyte Echo), plate arrays, LIMS systems, and attention to detail

Identify areas that need development in order to streamline the process and work with IT and computational biology teams to create and incorporate laboratory information management systems (LIMS) into our workflows.

    Manage a Research Associate I

  • Intrexon Corporation

Research Associate II - Strain Engineering

Performed DNA construction via PCR, E.coli transformations, yeast assembly, Gibson assembly, strain construction via electroporation, strain banking, strain testing and validation for the methane bioconversion project.

  • Threshold Enterprises

    Research Assistant

Threshold Enterprises is the parent company of Source Naturals and Planetary Herbals. As a research assitant my primary job was to read journal articles pertaining to a given health concern. Create a formula to assist in alleviating the health concern. Assist Quality Control with experimentation to validate potential ingredients. Coordinate with other departments to place the product on the shelf in a timely fashion. Find and communicate with external sources to procure raw materials for use in formulas. Write technical documents detailing up to date research. Assist in the second and final round hiring of new employees. Train newly hired research assistants. I assisted in reworking the training program, to better integrate all of the different aspects of the job, and communicate them effectively.

  • PrepPoint

    Associate Tutor

Traveled to client’s homes and tutored students of varying ages in Math, Science, and English.
